Description

The first ever event to completely focus on Optical Coherence Tomography attracted in excess of 250 optical professionals from across the UK and Ireland.

Held at the Hilton Metropole Birmingham 22 & 23 November 2015, the National OCT Conference attracted some of the profession’s  leading Professors, Dr’s, Scientists and Optometry practitioners from the UK and overseas including, Professor Paulo Stanga; Professor James Wollfsohn; Professor Heinrich Heimann; and Professor Magdy Moussa, to name but a few.

The diverse conference program was designed to cater for a multitude of user levels, with a wide range of topics covered from skills workshops, to lectures and peer discussions, totalling 28 hours of education with 50 CET points up for grabs across the two days. Conference highlights included keynote presentations on the Macula – Beyond my Referral, which reviewed current and emerging treatment options for macular conditions; and a lecture on OCT Findings in the Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Retinal and Choroidal Tumours. In addition, Professor Stephen Vernon’s thorough view of the literature on OCT in glaucoma, and the power of OCT to detect changes, in particular, thinning of the macular ganglion cell complex over time, before functional losses in visual fields are detected. It highlighted the importance of such technology in optometric practice as on average, you need a >30% loss of retinal nerve fibre layer before a visual field defect becomes apparent.

On the entertainment side Sunday night culminated with a competitive and intelligent battle of the brains with the Topcon University Challenge quiz. Bringing together popular quiz shows like A Question of Sport, 8 out of 10 cats,

Never Mind the Buzzcocks and QI with a University Challenge twist, the evening was very topical to optical industry and an entertaining way to end the first day. Dr Catharine Chisholm (a.k.a Paxman) stepped in as the quiz master and two teams Northern Noitalls (lead by Sarah Morgan) and Southern Octonauts (lead by Nicholas Rumney) went head to head in the quiz game to win the first ever Topcon University Challenge trophy. With the participants truly embracing the entertainment elements of the quiz game, the Northern Noitalls started off with a motivational team haka and the music round was highlighted with Sarah Morgan giving a vocal performance of her own adaptation of I Dreamed a Dream song. The team to walk away with the trophy at the end of the evening was the Northern Noitalls with 220 points.
