Mr Abbas Asaria, BSc (Hons) MCOptom

Abbas Asaria comes from a large family of registered Eyecare Professionals including Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Contact lens and Dispensing Opticians and obtained his degree in Optometry from The City University in London. In his early career as an Optometrist and with a strong optical and dispensing background, Abbas worked in practice, management, training and professional services roles. With a passion for professional development and teaching, Abbas returned to The City University Optometry and Visual Science Department as a visiting Clinical Tutor and progressed to become Lead Clinician and Clinical Skills tutor for the Primary Care Clinics. Alongside assessing clinical competence of undergraduates, Abbas founded EyeCan Training a successful Pre-Reg training company. In 2013, Abbas was approached by a large global ophthalmic equipment manufacturer and went on to become a Regional Sales Manager and Clinical Affairs Specialist. He now runs successful management consultancy Star Optical and his accomplishments have been publicised in well-known industry press, being personally acknowledged by recognised institutions and key opinion leaders in the industry. Abbas is also an accredited peer-review facilitator for the College of Optometrists and a clinical, technical and marketing adviser to global eyecare companies.

 

 

 
 

Nicola Bennett

Nicola has 7 years experience in Optometric practice, using a wide range of ophthalmic imaging and measurement techniques utilising Topcon Instruments including OCT, fundus photography, OCT Angiography, Perimetry and other data collection technology. Nicola has a wealth of experience in OCT diagnosis and image capture with difficult patients and children.

Currently Nicola is in the process of completing The Gloucestershire Retinal Education Certificate of Higher Education (OCT Capture & Interpretation.

 

   

 
 

Mr Simon Berry

Simon has been a qualified Optometrist for over 20 years. He started his pre-registration at Sunderland Eye Infirmary and still works two sessions a week as a Specialist Optometrist. Simon set up his own optometric practice in Durham in 2002. Simon’s background is very clinical and he has tried to expand his optometric practice in that direction. Simon Berry Optometrist are involved in all extended areas of clinical practice and have tended to specialize in children’s eyecare and for patients with a learning disability.

Morven Campbell, BSc(Hons) MCOptom

Morven is based in an independent practice focused on patient care. Having utilised OCT imaging for over a decade Morven feels it has revolutionised her practice, allowing for more accurate and timely diagnosis of many conditions. Morven’s main clinical interests are paediatric optometry, dry eye and contact lenses. She is passionate about patient education and believes the use of all forms of digital imaging aids understanding and ensures patients are knowledgeable about their eyes and therefore more likely to seek help should circumstances change.

Alison graduated from the University of Bradford in May 2014 with BSc (Hons) in Optometry and completed her pre-registration year in Limavady, Northern Ireland. After fully qualifying as an Optometrist in July 2015, Alison also completed the College of Optometrists Professional Certificate in Medical Retina and Glaucoma through the University of Ulster.

She moved to Herefordshire and started working at BBR Optometry in June 2017, along with a day a week at Hereford County Hospital’s Eye Department in their 'Virtual Clinic'.

Alison is currently studying towards a further qualification in Independent Prescribing through Aston University.

 

 

 
 

Mr Indie Grewal, BSc (Hons) MCOptom DipTp(IP) Prof Cert Glau FBDO FBCLA

Indie is a qualified Dispensing Optician and Optometrist with 25 years experience within the Optical Industry. Shortly after qualifying as an Optometrist he joined Visioncare Research as a Research Optometrist. He opened his own Leightons Franchise in St Albans in 2001, as well as participating in contact lens clinical trials, he has a special interest in Myopia Management and Multifocal contact lens fitting. Indie believes that technology forms the basis of a good eye examination. Since opening in 2001 he has continually updated and expanded the technology in his practice. He purchased his first OCT in 2009 and recently updated this to a Topcon Triton Plus. He also regularly conducts wide-field imaging with an Optos Daytona. For contact lens and dry eye assessments he uses both corneal topography as well as the Triton Plus. Indie believes that technology helps in diagnosing early eye conditions and also for patient education as well as improving patient loyalty.

Dr Scott Mackie is an IP Optometrist and a respected key opinion leader for the optical industry. He has many roles including running clinics at his practices in Scotland, sitting on GOC council, being a trustee for the International Glaucoma Association, being an advisor to NHS National Education Scotland and an assessor for the College of Optometrists. He has post graduate qualifications in Diabetic Eye Disease, Low Vision, Cataract and Laser Surgery and Independent Prescribing. His interests include Education running the Scottish Optical Conference, Pathology lecturing at Glasgow Caledonian University, Specialist Dispensing being on the national Clinical Committee for ABDO and Dementia being the Professional Services Director for Visioncall. In his spare time he likes spending time with the family in Arran and sailing round the West Coast of Scotland.

Alice McTrustry, PhD BSc (Hons) Dip Opt., DipTP(IP), FHEA

Optometrist

Alice is a qualified Independent Prescribing Optometrist with a keen interest in ocular pathology. She has worked in private practice, the Hospital Eye Service and as part of the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service. She held a research post at the University of Edinburgh where she was part of a team looking at objective ways of measuring visual fields using eye tracking technology. Alice obtained her PhD looking at the effects of axial myopia on visual performance at Glasgow Caledonian University where she worked as a Lecturer until June 2018. Additionally, Alice has extensive experience of teaching post graduate Optometrists and other Eyecare Professionals. She was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2016. Alice has also been the Consulting Optometrist for various Film and TV productions. Her main areas of interest are visual fields, myopia and OCT.

 

 

 
 

Laura Pigula

With 10 years experience within the optical industry starting as a spectacle dispenser and then becoming an Ophthalmic Photographer in 2012, Laura has been able to experience ophthalmic imaging in so many different settings, and using such a vast range of ophthalmic imaging equipment such as OCT, FFA/ICG, Fundus Photography and Slit Lamp imaging for different patient pathology.

Laura’s greatest achievement was working at Oxford Eye Hospital where she was part of the imaging research team and was relied upon by Prof MacLaren and C.K Patel to capture high quality images for their study patients in trials for conditions such as ROP, Choroideremia and Retinitis Pigmentosa. 

 

 

 
 

Mr Peter Rockett, Bsc (Hons) MCOptom

Peter is an optometrist based in the West Midlands where he is co-director of a small group of independent practices. He has 5 years’ experience of OCT - which usually means every day is a learning day – and the issues around acquiring an OCT and integrating it into the practice are familiar ones. He is secretary of the LOC and is involved in CET provision locally. As clinical lead for the well-established local MECS service he plays a key role in the development of optometry in the community and is involved in negotiating new services including a glaucoma referral pathway. Outside of work Peter is keen on photographing the real world and staying fit.

Nick works in full-time private practice in Hereford. Until 2004 he was one of the founders of Optometric Educators Ltd. He is an examiner at PQE and Fellowship level for the College of Optometrists. In 2001 he was elected to the General Optical Council. He was re-elected in December 2006 and his appointment to the new Council was confirmed in 2009. He has published over 40 papers in optometric journals, including: Journal of the Optical Society of America, Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics, Optometry & Vision Science, Optometry Today, Optician, British Journal of Visual Impairment, British Journal of Optometry and Dispensing and even the odd letter in the BMJ and Eye. He presents lectures and workshops to optometrists and ophthalmologists on low vision assessment, low vision management, investigative techniques, ocular therapeutics, red eye management as well as other unrelated practice management issues such as succession planning, computerised banking and political issues such as therapeutics. He has presented at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists 1996, 1999 and 2003 meetings. In 2001 he was one of two invited international lecturers at the SECO meeting in Atlanta, USA.

 

 

 
 

Mr Amar Shah

Amar has worked in a number of different practices in the South West and has for the last 6.5 years had a Boots Opticians franchise on the outskirts of Bristol. He has always had a keen interest in technology and especially low vision. He works closely with the RNIB, Macular society and more recently UCAN to support those with sight impairment in any way that he can. He is very fortunate to be supported by an excellent team, allowing him to be away from his practice and is locally chair of the LOC and more recently a commissioning lead for LOCSU. Away from Optometry, spending time with his young family is how most of Amar’s time disappears; as well as trying to get out on his bike. He also works on the trustee board of two small charities in the South West helping support children.

 

 

 
 

Rebecca Stoner

Rebecca graduated with a BSc in Optometry in 2007 from the University of Bradford. Before joining Topcon, she worked for 10 years in high street practice, combining testing with teaching on the company Pre-registration training programme. Since 2010, she has also worked as clinical teaching staff at the University of Bradford.  She is a member of the York and North Yorkshire Local Optometric Committee and an active Team Leader for Vision Aid Overseas.

 

 

 
 

Mr Drew Thompson

Drew is an Optometrist with a broad spectrum of professional experience. He has worked in both primary and secondary services for both multiple and independent sectors. His current role allows him to practice both on the high street as well as run a cornea clinic within the secondary eye care setting. Drew’s special interest is in complex contact lens fitting which has led him to offer his services to clients with a variety of interesting corneal conditions. This experience has also led to work in film and television designing and fitting lenses for the entertainment media. He has been using and interpreting OCT images for eight years and has regular access to both 1st generation and the latest models of OCT including OCT-A. He has an interest in imaging techniques to gain the most possible clinical data which includes its use for contact lens fitting and anterior segment analysis.

 

 

 
 

Mr Brian Tompkins, BSc(Hons) FCOptom FBCLA

Brian is a Past President and Fellow of the BCLA and is extremely proactive in fitting all types of contact lenses to any age and prescription. He lectures internationally on business, dry eye and contact lens topics, all based on real life experience in the consulting room. Brian has been awarded the accolade “One of The Best Clinical Photographers in the World Today’’ by Prof Nathan Efron and regularly supplies images for lectures, magazine articles and publications worldwide. His work in contact lenses has included collaborative clinical trials with Eurolens Research, Visioncare Research Ltd and OTG Research & Consultancy.

He has been a Key Opinion Leader and Clinical Advisor to virtually all the contact lens manufacturers and many of the technology and instrument companies over the years and has participated in launching many new products into the global market. He lectures internationally on business, imaging technology, dry eye and contact lens topics, all based on real life experience in the consulting room.
